Pick the right time to bring up divorce

You know that you want to ask for a divorce. Now you just want to talk to your spouse.

Technically, you know that you could just file for divorce and then serve them the papers. But this isn't just a legal decision for you. You have children together. You know you'll need to stay in contact even after the marriage ends. You want to do this in a more personal manner.

One key is to pick the right time. While you do not want to wait too long once you know that you're going to get divorced, you also do not have to rush and bring it up instantly. Be intentional about finding the right opportunity.

The best thing to do is to look for a private moment when it's just the two of you. Pick an environment where you can feel comfortable. This may be emotionally difficult for both of you, and you want to do what you can to limit the stress of the situation.

The last thing you want to do is wait until you get into some sort of argument or disagreement and then blurt out that you want a divorce. That just makes it all harder. Your spouse may not even think you are serious, assuming you are just over-reacting to the disagreement and not realizing this is something that you wanted long before the current discussion.

Of course, talking about divorce is just the first step. After you get the process started, make sure you are well aware of all of the legal steps you need to take.
