Should you change your name after divorce?

| Jun 18, 2018 | Uncategorized |

A sense of relief may wash over you once the divorce proceedings are over. However, as soon as this done, a woman’s attention may turn to getting her old name back. It certainly makes sense because she does not want any reminders of her ex-husband around, but there are considerations to make.

If you want to go through a name change, then you will need to submit all the proper paperwork on time and that you do everything correctly. You have spent months in one legal entanglement, and you do not want to end up in another. However, before you go through it, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself.

Will the kids mind?

During divorces, the most important thing involves taking care of the children. If you and your ex have any children together, then it is highly likely they have their father’s last name. They have already gone through a lot with the divorce and now having their mother change her name can be one more thing to deal with. Additionally, your children’s friends may have trouble remembering which name to call you.

Do you want to go back to an old job?

Many women give up careers to raise a family. After divorce, you may want to re-enter the workforce, but people in the industry know you by your previous name. In this instance, it may work to your advantage to go back to your old name.

Do you want to go through another legal process?

It takes a lot of time and effort to change a name. You will also need to change your name on your driver’s license, passport and Social Security card. All this takes time and money, and you need to prepare yourself mentally. If you do not mind the name you have now, then there is no rush if you wish to delay the process for a year or two.
