What to do when things get ugly in your divorce

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2017 | Divorce |

No matter how you look at things, if you are divorcing your spouse, things could get ugly. It is not uncommon for spouses in Omaha to initially start the process on good and amicable terms, only to end up at each other’s throats. No matter what you feel the issues are or the solutions you have in place to resolve them, it is important for you to try to avoid as much drama as possible.

It is so easy to give in to the anger and frustration you feel when your soon-to-be ex-spouse is doing everything possible to provoke and aggravate you. Instead of taking things to heart, remember, she or he is acting out because of the situation. Here are some things you can do if your divorce takes a turn for the worse

Take the high road

You do not need to resort to mudslinging and name calling to get what you need out of your divorce. Doing so only creates additional problems that can take longer to resolve. In the meantime, your divorce is taking much longer than necessary to finalize. When your ex-spouse comes at you with his or her demands, find out why. Do not get on the defensive and dig in your heels because you do not think your soon-to-be-ex deserves them, he or she may have legitimate reasons you have not considered.

Vent elsewhere

Your ex-partner is not the person you should be blowing off steam to. See a therapist or confide in a close friend or relative who will not betray your trust. This person can help you get a better handle on things without you losing your cool. When your ex-spouse notices you are not reacting to negative antics, she or he may start to take stock of her or his behavior and adjust it accordingly.

No matter how you feel, do your best to stay on task. Do not let emotions rule your divorce, or you risk things getting messy and can easily lead to complications that cost you more in the long-run.
