How should you choose a guardian for your child?

On Behalf of | Apr 25, 2016 | Probate And Estate |

As you go through the estate planning process, there will come a point when you need to answer this very important question: What is the best way to choose a guardian?

You never want to think about a day when you could pass on, leaving your minor child alone, but this could happen. This is why it is better to be safe than sorry. This is why you need to name a guardian as soon as possible.

Here are a few questions that you can answer:

— Whose parenting style most closely identifies with your own?

— Whom do you feel most comfortable leaving your child with?

— Who is most capable of raising your child in a responsible manner?

— Does the person you are thinking about have children of their own?

— Would the person have enough time to devote to raising your child?

— Would the person be willing to take on the task?

Final tip: Don’t name somebody the guardian of your child until you ask him or her about this. You must make sure the person is 100 percent on board with the idea.

The way you choose a guardian for your child is your choice. Just make sure you answer the right questions as you go through the selection process. This is the only way to ensure that you are making a good decision with a clear mind.

When you begin to think about the future, when you begin to create an estate plan, be sure to consider the well being of your child or children.
