Child custody issues: Creating successful visitation plans

Divorced or divorcing parents who wish to exercise their rights to child visitation usually have specific expectations in mind. Sometimes these expectations are realistic, but other times, they are not. For example, often a divorced parent believes he or she will be able to see their child every day. The reality, however, is often very different.

Complicating matters even further, many parents do not expect disagreements when it comes to creating visitation plans. This is especially the case if the divorce has proceeded with little or no animosity between spouses. Caring parents want as much time with their children as possible and that is where a disagreement can arise.

Whenever possible, it is always a good idea for both parents to agree on a visitation schedule. Doing so can enhance the child custody agreement, prevent delays and foster a sense of cooperation in parenting. However, sometimes a mutual agreement remains elusive. Further, there are many issues that can have an effect on the visitation schedule. Examples include past domestic violence and drug or alcohol abuse.

The good news is that parents can enjoy a lot of flexibility when creating visitation plans or schedules. While the state of Nebraska does impose a few requirements on visitation schedules, parents are largely free to arrange visitation in a way that benefits their children and themselves.

Even with the freedom to choose, many parents still find themselves at odds when arranging custody or visitation. Often, working with an attorney can open the door to solutions parents had not previously considered.
